A
Pathway Through Parks,
by Carl S. Chavez
A Pathway Through Parks was a must read for me and
my family. As "park people" ourselves, it brought back
sweet memories of events and people while reaffirming the values
and realities of the job of protecting and earning the public
trust.
The story of Carl and Margaret's family living and working
in California's precious resources captures the essence of what
so many view as the best job in the world. It helps to answer
the question about what folks in the Stetson hats and the "green
trucks," actually do. The sometimes bumpy travels down "The
Pathway" honor the park profession with trail signs of humor,
personal integrity, individual creativity and true caring for
others. For park employees and families it affirms a life-time
of contributions and sacrifice. For someone considering a calling
to park work, the book offers a rush of possibilities with a
dose of reality.
I hope all the "old timers" get a chance to read
this work (many will wish they had written it). I'm convinced
that every new employee should receive the book as required reading
and suggest every visitor center offer this glimpse into the
lives of people who serve them.
The "Wizard" has used his retirement well.
