Bert Dunshee has long been an ardent conservationist and lover of the out-of-doors with a deep appreciation and respect for our heritage and supporter of California State Parks. Just after the turn of the 20th century, Dunshee was spending weekends hiking the slopes of Mt. Tamalpais. The Dunshees were instrumental in the establishment of Mt. Tamalpais State Park and acquisitions at Shell Beach, Camp Taylor, Tomales Bay State Park, Stinson Beach, Tamalpais State Park, Angel Island, and worked on the acquisition of Malakoff Diggins and Indian Grinding Rock State Parks. |
Bert and Verna Dunshee initiated the scholarship program to send Rangers to Audubon Camp having personally sponsored a full scholarship in 1950. Bert was a regional vice president of the Conference of California Historical Societies and hence active in the recent acquisition of Rancho Olompali, the newest State Park Unit in Marin County.
A Marin resident for over 50 years, Bertram is a retired P.G.& E. civil engineer. He relates how he and his wife Verna worked long and hard for the acquisition of land in Marin for state parks including Shell Beach, Camp Taylor, Tomales Bay State Park, Stinson Beach, Tamalpais State Park, Angel Island. He lived from 1891-1986.
