ROMA PHILBROOK RENTZ
CSPRA Honorary State Park Ranger 1996
CSPRA selected Roma Philbrook Rentz as the 1996 recipient of the Honorary Ranger award, for her many years of commitment to the protection and preservation California's State Parks. Her efforts helped establish the William Penn Mott Jr., Training Center on the Asilomar State Beach Conference Grounds and added hundreds of acres in land acquisition to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

In 1978 she began a 19-year relationship as a volunteer for Anza-Borrego Foundation, a non-profit organization, chairing several committees as well as holding the position of Vice President. For most of her tenure her major role was heading the Acquisitions Committee. It necessitated planning many complex transactions to secure privately owned parcels located within the boundary of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park for ultimate inclusion into the California State Park system.

In 1949 she became the Manager of Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, CA, continuing in that position for 28 years. She has always considered that period the most important part of her life. Her meticulous management involved work on a $9 million Master Plan for the center solely funded from operating funds.

She also developed the William Penn Mott, Jr. Training Center for training the California Parks and Recreation employees. Asilomar Conference Grounds was initially a non-profit facility recognized and used for scientific, religious and other meetings. When the need arose, she also overlooked a major expansion of the facility that included extensive dining and sleeping facilities.

Throughout the years Asilomar was the recipient of many prestigious awards as well as landscape and architectural honors. Her work was so treasured and well done she became known as "Lady Asilomar" and throughout the years she received many personal accolades, among them the California Golden Bear Award and in 1976 she was named Monterey Peninsula Woman of the Year. On July 1, 1956 she administered the transfer of Asilomar to the California State's Division of Parks and Beaches.
