Claire Schlotterbeck
CSPRA's Honorary Ranger for 2002
by Geary Hund
As president of Hills for Everyone, Claire Schlotterbeck has
been dedicated to the protection of open space in southern California
for more than 21 years.
During the late 1970's and early 1980's her organization successfully
advocated for the protection of the land which is now Chino Hills
State Park, a hot spot of biological diversity in southern California.
Claire's group prevailed in the face of tremendous development
pressure, gaining broad based support.
If not for the efforts of Claire and the park's co-founder,
David Myers, Chino Hills State Park would not exist. At 13,000
acres, it provides a nearly wilderness quality experience within
a short distance of 15 million people. More recently, Claire
played a pivotal role in the preservation of the Coal Canyon
biological corridor linking Chino Hills State Park to the Santa
Ana Mountains. She is now working on statewide issues including
habitat linkages and legislation to prevent damaging roads from
being built in State Parks. Claire is the recipient of the Chevron
Conservation Award, the California State Parks De Witt Award
and numerous other honors.
CSPRA is proud to present the 2002 Honorary California Stat
Park Ranger Award to Claire Schlotterbeck for her efforts in
support of the organization's founding principles and California's
State Parks.
